It is the best maintained Castle I have ever been in. I'm afraid the Braemar winter doesn't make it possible for us to open in the winter. The present Braemar Castle was constructed in 1628 by John Erskine, Earl of Mar, as a hunting lodge and to counter the rising power of the Farquharsons, replacing an older building, which was the successor of nearby Kindrochit Castle, which dates from the 11th century AD. Braemar castle is well worth a visit, it is run by volunteers from in and around Braemar. Every penny is so vital to us at the moment as we fundraise to improve our" unspectacular" look to spectacular! Every time I pass this castle it is closed. Toggle location map. The staff were very friendly and helpful and made the tour as accessible as possible for the two of our party who weren't so mobile. The Castle is open while the resoration work is in progress but during May, only at weekends (11-3).
A few of the upper rooms have not yet been renovated so are closed to the public although this did not bother me as there is more than plenty to see. Add to MyABDN. Braemar Castle (Castle Tour) Visit to a classic 17th century ‘L plan’ Scottish Tower House which was heavily fought over in the Jacobite Rebellions of 1715 and 1745. With a 50 repairing year lease from Invercaukd Estate, for the past 10 years the village has been working to raise funds and gradually conserve and restore the castle and provide even better visitor facilities. Fascinating tour … We are sorry if the information at the car park is unclear. The volunteers work incredibly hard to fund raise as well as making sure visitros have a memorable visit.Went today to visit the castle, although still under restoration, very much ready for people to go in and explore the interior.
They day we went the local school children were dressed up and were our guides.
