The Spy with the Customs Officer would probably be rough as well.I would also try to avoid the roles that let you look through a lot of cards (Newscaster, Writer) with 6 people if you want to encourage more bluffing.Protester will add more violence which may be good with the lawyer of if you want more ways for people to meet violent ends.I really liked the interaction between Peacekeeper and Protestor where you could be in a treaty with someone but still pay the 3 to get a kill on them.We had something of a problem in our game with people simply cycling the deck all the time with the Producer, so I could imagine that being exacerbated by the ones which give you even more draw..Writer (Draw 1 from the center deck like Ambassador, and can spend $1 per draw to keep drawing): "Information = Power" taken to the extreme. When someone claims that role, they pay you a coin.Missionary: When you lose a card, you can remove it from the game face-down and claim it's a Missionary, and as long as nobody calls you on it you get to draw a new card. The game naturally takes a bit longer since a seasoned Coup group is no longer just going through the motions, though setup and takedown is easier once the group is more familiar with the game. The box comes with dividers for keeping all the different cards apart, so picking ones to play with isn't much hassle. It simply doesn't match the simplicity and elegance of the original..Well, so far I've only watched 2/3rds of a game and played in one myself, so I can't offer much comment yet.
Before each game players choose five character roles from a randomized deck. They're neat to have, but I just don't see a practical purpose for them. Unlike a normal attack you now have to deal with 4-5 simultaneous claims, and it's really hard to decide who to believe and who to call.
Big moves get punished and the winners usually sit quietly until a couple of people have knocked each other out. Characters have a unique variable power, and the deck is formed by three iterations of each role for fifteen cards total.A player starts the game with two coins and two influence cards – i.e., two face-down character cards. The players with Producer cards just kept sifting the deck every turn looking for Capitalists and got really unlucky at finding them. Coup: Rebellion G54 Anarchy adds seven new roles and actions to that game for more vicious fun: Anarchists, Paramilitary, Arms Dealers, Social Media, Financier, Plantation owners, and Socialists. Get to $4-5, use Writer to dig through the entire center deck, and suddenly it becomes nearly impossible for other players to bluff (and easy for you to). Since you have a token there's no opportunity to trap your opponent - they'll just pick on someone else instead. Speculator is way less good when you have to pay $1 first! The Speculator role can have trouble with roles that steal money, like the Priest or Politician. Having played maybe a dozen games at this point with my group that has probably over 300 hands of Coup under our belts, it's really revitalizing our experience. That's been my experience with it.
On your turn, you can take any of the actions of the five characters in play, regardless of which characters you actually have in front of you, or you can take one of two general actions. In Coup: Rebellion G54 (G54), the last player with influence in the game wins, with influence being represented by face-down character cards in your playing area. One small anecdote: I came very close to unleashing the general's special power on my group, but I got caught bluffing to finance his ability and was sadly executed before I could strike. It's all the gameplay of regular Coup, but with 25 unique roles … I've played Coup and Reformation for maybe a hundred hours, though, so just having new toys to play with is pretty appealing for me.I'd say the box size thing probably doesn't impact hugely on the gameplay, though, since despite have 25 roles you only pick 5 to play with. In Coup: Rebellion G54 (G54), the last player with influence in the game wins, with influence being represented by face-down character cards in your playing area.
