Although many think of the Dust Bowl as mainly affecting Oklahoma, the Texas panhandle was very hard hit, with much of the damage centering on Dalhart.The original settlement was platted early in 1901 by W.J. Adair, cashier, and W.N. Of those six counties, only two towns had national banks, with Stratford in next door Sherman County having one bank that liquidated in 1913, with just a single note known, making it unrelated to the Dust Bowl and basically uncollectible in any event.Here is a small-size Series of 1929 Type 1 $20 note issued by the First National Bank of Dalhart from the author’s collection.The First National Bank of Dalhart closed in 1934 and reopened as the First National Bank in Dalhart. After reading The Worst Hard Time, the recent excellent non-fiction account of the Dust Bowl, Dalhart and the XIT Museum were high on my list of places to visit. It covered portions of 10 counties, which apparently helped perpetuate the myth that the brand XIT stands for “Ten in Texas.” The brand was in fact created to thwart rustlers.In 1901, the syndicate that owned the ranch began selling off the land to pay foreign investors as the bonds became due. Doors will open at 6 P.M. for the wine and cheese social, followed by dinner donated and catered by JBS-Live Pork Dalhart… It had a total issue of almost $1.2 million and it was the only local bank to issue small-size notes, making its notes the ones that would have circulated in the area during the Dust Bowl. Dalhart also had a second bank, the Dalhart National, which opened at the beginning of 1905 but liquidated in 1912, making its notes rather rare and at the same time unrelated to the Dust Bowl. Later the settlement was named Denrock, a combination of the names of the two railroads.In 1901 Robert B. Edgell named his new newspaper the Denrock Sun. We have 12 lanes for bowling, a variety of arcade games, along with a restaurant and bar.
