Once her missions begin, the book gets bogged down in the kind of muddlI can't remember the last time a book had me and lost me and won me back in such a circular fashion.
I found the conceit of the main character referring to herself as Stephanie, Petra, or Marina depending on which role she is playing and who she is playing to—even in her own inner monologue—fascinating.
All the sex and violence here is grimly realistic and played for grit not flash.
Consequently, secret services became more answerable to politicians than they ever had been, just at a time when they needed to be more furtive.”“Stereotyping didn’t become stereotyping without being rooted in fact.
[ She literally pushes someone onto subway tracks and he didn’t even speak English.
On balance, I really liked the main character and the plot had lots of potential. I loved how Stephanie's different identities were handled, how as she underwent emotional turmoil and questions of loyalty, the lines between them blurred. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read.
But I do think Stephanie can carry the story I didn't know what to expect going into this book. And if it isn't, will those who created her ever let her go? Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. I got halfway through the book and just could not muster the motivation to care about Stephanie/Lisa/Petra any more. Is her organization telling her the truth about what really happened? It was interesting at first, but then became much too confusing and frankly, drawn out in my opinion. The sheer volume of improbabilities could club to death even the most robust suspension of disbelief.

I've never read an espionage thriller before and so I was consistently taken by surprise as things got crazier and crazier.
But as her missions become more brutal, and the stakes grow ever higher, she begins to question everything she knows about flight NEO027. Eines Tages sieht sie sich erneut mit dem Unglück konfrontiert, als sie erfährt, dass der Tod ihrer Familie kein zufälliges Unglück war, sondern ein Attentat.
The series of four Stephanie Patrick novels (or as I think of them, Petra Reuter novels) are as good as anything that LeCarre or Steinhauer wrote.Really not my type of story.

Stephanie is such vividly dire straits, it nearly overwhelms the espionage plot, which is where a lot of the problems lie.
Her immersion into the world of international espionage teaches Stephanie how to numb her feelings and act on instinct alone. I will not read the rest of the books in this series. This book is about a woman who has lost her family in a plane crash and tries to find herself.. The film was a dismal flop.
This story works best when it's about Stephanie's struggle as the espionage plot is old hat even for 1999 when this was written. The climax is incredibly tense but basically stops short and then we just hear about what happened, which is incredibly frustrating. Florian Ross
