Between non-aggression pacts and alliances there are coalitions, unions that act as a step along the path to confederation without being guarantees of friendship forever. Not the best Total War game but not the worst by a long shot. A World Betrayed adds two new factions in a 194 start (along with several base game factions) that are lead by characters that were already in the base game. Units with crossbows chunter out steady volley after volley of bolts, horseriders form up into wedges at the last minute and charge, infantry lock down their shields and absorb damage. Factions (aside from the bandit and Yellow Turban subcultures) are thus more diverse than Shogun 2 in how they play but less so than with the Warhammer games. On the personality front, it doesn't help that units will sometimes stand in place and let you shoot them for a bit too long before doing something about it, or ignore a target you left open and charge the wrong one. Firstly there are faction packs with new subcultures which have their own unit and building rosters. They allow for more than two members as well, so my Confederation to Defeat the Barbarians has new faction leaders lining up to join it on the regular. I'm enjoying it much more than WH2 these days.Best of the historical titles, has the most refined systems yet. More immersive and the replaybility is there.I really do like the politic system in 3K tho. Some of them are warlords with varying degrees of legitimacy to their attempt to take charge of China, some of them are straight-up bandits, and one of them is Dong Zhuo, a tyrant who begins the campaign with the current child-Emperor as a hostage. Eight Princes is the least popular, taking place during the Jin Dynasty and thus being completely removed from the base campaign. I could have said no to the offer and carried on the war but it would have felt like bullying at that point.
Because of the nature of the source material the factions that form the titular three kingdoms of Wu, Wei, and Shu Han (Sun Jian, Cao Cao, and Liu Bei respectively) have by far the most characters and flavor in the base game. Because... battles are not the best in 3k on fundamental level - we have this element system with personal 6 unit armies and classes and skills and characters stats and if you play in record it's just RPS with one element being better than other and you find out that general bodyguard are stronger in eraly game then any romance Lü Bu. The buildings bonus were far from sufficient on that matter.7-8. Occasionally a flurry of arrows or a riderless horse will pass in the background, but I'm intently focused on something that looks more like a game of Tekken.Total War: Three Kingdoms embraces the story it's inspired by, Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong, rather than strict historical accuracy. Factions play differently based on unique units, buildings, techs, and abilities, the kinds of heroes they have, and where they are located on the map/what resources are available.
