We use the burlap sacks paired with cardboard for sheet mulching. I googled it and didn't come up with much of anything except coffee chaff. I have started drying out my own grounds just to refresh what is lost due to scooping/being kicked out of the coop. So I emailed a couple of roasters in the area to see what they do with their leftover chaff and if I could have some. We also usually have burlap coffee bags. How often should a coop be cleaned out then? I plan on composting it too and using it in the garden. I imagine the coffee chaff smells wonderful.

Hello Coffee Forum Members, I come here probably to ask a somewhat dumb question. We have pet hens and try to be fastidious about their sleeping room which means we are constantly buying wood shavings and eating hay for their bedding.
Not a bad barter... We also have a garden so we do put the shavings in the soil and are looking forward to adding the coffee chaff as well in the future. Previously, I used straw, but that can be very harsh on my hands (and chicken feet). These don’t compost quickly, but I put them at the base of fruit trees as fertilizer/ mulch.My local newspaper sells recycled paper as animal bedding. So, can chickens eat coffee grounds? How cool, after reading this, I found a local coffee roasting company in Salt Lake City about 20 minutes away from home, and they are willing to give me their coffee chaff for my coop! They have coffee grounds available too. Large quantities, already bagged. I love this idea, problem though is where to I got it?...hunted the web & found places in the Northwest but none for the Northeast. I have continued to use straw or pine savings in the nest boxes. The roaster is forever cleaning his equipment rather than doing what he does best. It is good for chickens to have access to dirt and a compost pile.
